For
decades Pafos remained a backwater, escaping the urban
development of Nicosia & Limassol. In 1984 Pafos
airport was built & hotels rapidly spread out
from the town to accommodate the resultant tourists.
The first settlement, Palea Pafos was established
around 1500BC, & the present town, Nea Pafos,
was founded in the 4th century BC by King Nikokles
as a port for the older city. Conquered by the Ptolemies
in 312BC, it flourished under their rule, becomimg
the islands capital in the 2nd century BC. Further
prosperity followed during the Pax Romana after 58BC,
when it became the seat of the Roman Proconsul. In
the 4th century AD the city was destroyed by an earthquake
& power transferred to Salamis, under its new
name Constantia. Pafos retained its reputation for
shipbuilding, however, & ships put in for supplies
& refitting during the Crusades. Ktima, the upper
town was built following attacks from Arab invaders,
but Nea Pafos was not entirely deserted & it briefly
flourished again as a port under Lusignan & Venetian
rule. In Ottoman times it was gradually deserted .
Today the coastal strip to the east has an abundance
of hotels, banks & restaurants, the lifeblood
of a very busy tourist industry.
